The Brick Centre

Located in between two ceramics companies the Brick Centre is a gathering of practical and theoretical information about brick. The building provides space for a masonry school, meeting rooms, workshop, lab and archive. These functions complement each other's working, whereby the educational function is fed with knowledge from the nearby brick companies. A visually and physically connected interior ensures the communication between the many users to support exchange of knowledge.

To ensure the exchange of knowledge between different users a visually and physically connected building is required. Therefore an introvert method is applied and specific views of the exterior are chosen to enhance the interior architecture. The building as volume is defined by the characteristics of brick: an sculpture like building which has an enclosed and massive expression. This sculptural expression means a reduction in materials, joints and openings in the volume.

Once the basic volume is settled in the surroundings the volume if further refined to express the sculptural massiveness. Hereby a brick (215x105x50mm) and a brick bond is developed to provide the building with clean ends and corners.

The brick factories which influenced the Brick Centre are characterized by a low horizontal volume to which a chimney is placed
